"Can't I just use a normal power point?"

The power-point myth

Yes, you can trickle-charge most EVs from a standard 10A power point using the portable cable supplied with the car — but it's the slow, last-resort option, not a charging solution. A general power point and its circuit were never designed to deliver high current for hours at a time, night after night. Doing that repeatedly stresses the outlet, the cable and the circuit, and on older wiring that's where heat and faults start.

A dedicated EV charger sits on its own circuit, sized and protected for the job, and charges several times faster. For anyone driving regularly, it's the safer and more practical choice — and it frees up your power points for everything else.

Load considerations — getting the sizing right

The single most important part of an EV charger installation isn't the charger, it's the assessment behind it. A charger can draw as much as your whole house at peak times, so it has to be planned around what your supply and switchboard can actually deliver.

  • How much current your supply and main switch are rated for
  • What other large loads you run — air-conditioning, oven, hot water, pool
  • When you'll typically charge (overnight charging is far easier on the supply)
  • Whether load management or a smart charger is worth setting up so the car backs off when the house is busy

Getting this right means your charger is fast enough to be useful without overloading the property — and it's why we assess before we quote.

Single vs three phase

Which supply suits you

Single phase

What most Perth homes have. A single-phase charger (commonly up to around 7kW) adds plenty of range overnight and suits the majority of households. The simplest, most common installation.

Three phase

Allows faster charging (e.g. up to ~11kW or more) and only helps if your property already has a three-phase supply, or you're bringing one in. Worth it for high-kilometre drivers or multi-EV households — but not necessary for most.

Switchboard capacity

Your switchboard decides whether a charger drops straight in or needs groundwork first. We check the available ways, the main switch rating and the condition of the board. Outcomes usually fall into one of three buckets:

  • Ready to go — the board has spare capacity and room, so we add a dedicated protected circuit for the charger.
  • Needs tidying or RCD work — the board is sound but needs RCD protection or a little reorganising to take the new circuit.
  • Needs an upgrade first — an older or full board, or one on a fuse system, is best brought up to standard before adding a high, continuous load.

EV charger questions

Can I just charge my EV from a normal power point?

A standard 10A power point can trickle-charge an EV using the portable cable that comes with the car, but it's slow and the circuit and outlet weren't designed for hours of continuous high load. For regular charging, a dedicated EV charger on its own protected circuit is safer and much faster. We can assess whether an existing point is suitable as an interim measure.
