What a safety switch actually does
A safety switch — properly called a residual current device, or RCD — constantly compares the electricity flowing out to your circuits against the amount coming back. In a healthy circuit those match. If even a small amount goes missing, that current is leaking somewhere it shouldn't — potentially through a person — and the RCD disconnects the power in a fraction of a second. That speed is what makes it a life-saving device rather than just a fuse.
So when it trips, it has done its one job. The question is what triggered it. It helps to know the difference: a circuit breaker trips on too much current (an overload or short), while a safety switch trips on current leaking to earth. They protect against different things.
Common causes of nuisance tripping
- A faulty appliance. The most common cause. A failing kettle, toaster, fridge, washing machine, pool pump, or even a cheap charger can leak enough current to trip the RCD.
- Moisture. Water in outdoor power points, garden lights, pumps or damaged cabling — which is why a lot of safety switches trip after rain.
- A damaged cable or fitting. A nail through a wall cable, a chewed lead, a cracked outdoor outlet or a light fitting that's let water in.
- Too many appliances on one RCD. Lots of devices each leaking a tiny, normal amount can add up and tip a sensitive RCD over its threshold.
- An ageing or faulty RCD. Like any component, an RCD can wear out and become over-sensitive, tripping when it shouldn't.
- A genuine wiring fault. Less common, but a real fault in the fixed wiring can cause persistent tripping that needs an electrician to trace.
What you can safely check yourself
There's a little safe troubleshooting you can do without opening anything up or touching wiring:
- Unplug everything on the affected area, reset the switch, then plug appliances back in one at a time. The one that trips it again is your likely culprit.
- Note whether it trips at a particular time — when it rains, when the pool pump starts, when the washing machine hits the spin cycle. Patterns are gold for diagnosis.
- If you find a suspect appliance, stop using it and have it checked or replaced.
What not to touch
Do not remove the switchboard cover or poke around inside it. Do not tape, wedge or bypass a safety switch to stop it tripping — that defeats the one device protecting your household. Don't keep forcing a switch back on repeatedly if it won't hold; leave that circuit off. And never touch a wet fitting, a damaged cable or anything that's warm, buzzing, sparking or smells of burning — treat that as an emergency.
When to call a licensed electrician
Call a licensed electrician if: the switch trips and won't reset at all; it keeps tripping after you've isolated appliances; it trips with the weather; you can't find an obvious cause; or anything looks, smells or feels wrong at the board. An electrician can test the RCD, measure the actual leakage on each circuit and trace a fault to the specific appliance, fitting or cable — rather than leaving you to guess. If your board is older and lacks proper RCD coverage to begin with, that's worth addressing too.

A tripping safety switch is usually doing its job — it has detected a fault and disconnected the power to protect people. That's a good thing. What's not safe is to defeat it, bypass it or keep forcing it back on without finding the cause. If it won't stay on, leave that circuit off and have a licensed electrician investigate.
