Do I need RCDs in my WA property?
What an RCD is — and why it matters
An RCD, or residual current device, is the "safety switch" at your switchboard. It watches the electricity flowing through your circuits and trips almost instantly if it detects current leaking to earth — the kind of leak that happens when someone touches a live part, or when water gets into a fitting. By cutting the power in a fraction of a second, it's designed to prevent a fatal electric shock.
This is a different job from a circuit breaker or fuse. Those protect the wiring from overload and short circuits. An RCD protects people. A genuinely safe switchboard has both, which is one reason older boards with only fuses and no RCDs are considered well overdue for attention.
Who needs RCDs in WA
- Homeowners. RCD protection on power and lighting circuits is the modern standard for WA homes. If your home is older and only partly protected (or not at all), it's a sensible upgrade regardless of when the rules technically applied to your build.
- Landlords and property managers. Compliant RCDs are required for WA residential rental properties — something that needs to be confirmed and kept current, not assumed.
- Anyone buying or selling. RCD status often comes up at sale and settlement, and it's far easier to deal with before it becomes a sticking point.
- Anyone doing electrical work. New circuits, renovations and switchboard work bring RCD requirements into play for the work being done.
"My house is old — am I exempt?"
Rules change over time, and an older installation may not have been required to have RCDs when it was built. But "not required when built" is not the same as "safe" or "still compliant for how the property is used today" — particularly for rentals, and particularly once any new electrical work is carried out. The honest answer is that the safest position, and usually the simplest, is to have proper RCD protection in place. A licensed electrician can tell you exactly where your property stands.
What not to touch
Don't open the switchboard to "check" whether you have RCDs — you can identify safety switches from the front (they usually have a "Test" button) without removing the cover. Never fit, replace or wire in an RCD yourself; this is licensed electrical work in WA. And if a safety switch trips repeatedly, don't tape or bypass it — that removes the protection it's there to provide.
How to find out where your property stands
The straightforward route is a licensed electrician checking your switchboard: confirming whether you have RCDs, whether they cover the circuits they should, whether they actually trip within the right time when tested, and what (if anything) is needed to bring the property up to standard. For rentals, that check can be recorded so owners and managers have evidence the property was compliant. If your board turns out to be old, full or fuse-based, adding RCDs is often best done as part of a switchboard upgrade rather than in isolation.

Rather than a single fixed number, the sensible approach is enough RCD protection that the relevant circuits — power and lighting — are covered, and that a single fault doesn't take out the whole house. A licensed electrician works out the right arrangement for your specific board and circuits.
